Watercolor designates both the artwork and the medium used. Watercolors are water-based paints that are generally applied on paper with brushes. It allows transparent paintings but demands a sure hand as the paint quickly permeates the paper.

Along with drawing, watercolor has been used for centuries for illustration and technical purposes as well as for art.
